SIPITANG: Residents of Long Pasia, a far flung village near Sabah-Sarawak border, will soon have access to the Internet wireless broadband connection from their homes, made possible with the implementation of a ‘Kampung Wi-fi’ project in the third quarter this year.
Deputy director of Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Sabah, Juslie Ellis, said they have identified two locations for the project and are in the final preparation to install the necessary equipment to connect the villagers to the Internet.
He added the community in the village would also be able to enjoy cellular phone services.
“All this will be available soon to allow the residents here to connect with each other and the outside world easily, so that they would not be left out from the mainstream telecommunication development,” he said.
He was speaking to reporters during the Information Department Adopted School and Cyber Partner 2012 programme, jointly organised by the department and CMC at SK Long Pasia, yesterday, which was officiated by Sindumin assemblyman Ahmad Bujang.
Ahmad in his speech commended the department’s initiative to help improve the learning and teaching condition of the school through its adoption programme.
He said this was proof that the government had never neglected any school situated in the remote areas and is always prepared to assist the rural community to improve their livelihood in all aspects, including education.
He noted that the Education Ministry has agreed to build a new school in Long Pasia and Long Mio to further improve the education quality in the area.
He also commended MCMC for its effort to promote IT
awareness among the rural community.
Ahmad also presented 1Malaysia laptops from MCMC and
schooling assistance from the Information Department to some 40 families.Also present were deputy education director Yunus Sapirin, SK Long Pasia headmaster Michael Opai, information officer for Interior (South) Zulhanin Hasni, the village chief and other community leaders from the surrounding areas.
